Like many people, you may have noticed a thinness and bareness to your lawn after a hard winter. You may have tried just “tossing” some more grass seed into those spots, but saw little to no improvement. While it may seem past repair, there are a few simple things you can do in the spring to get your grass growing thick and luscious again.

Aeration

If you have ever seen a lawn covered in small “plugs” of dirt and small holes all over, this is a result of aeration. By aerating your lawn, air, water, and nutrients are able to penetrate the grass roots and improve their health. Aeration encourages new growth in your lawn, improves health, and combats soil compaction in a layer of dirt called the thatch.

Thatch?

The thatch is a layer of dead grass, old roots, and decomposing plants that has been building up season after season. This thick, compact, “carpet” of last year’s growth hinders your grass’ ability to grow to its fullest potential. While the buildup of a thatch is naturally occurring, it blocks large amounts of light, water, and nutrients from reaching deep into the grass, and needs to be removed in order to bring your grass back to its full health. By aerating your lawn and allowing air to reach the thatch, the thatch will be able to decompose much quicker and allow your grass to grow thick again.

Overseeding

Overseeding is the planting of new grass seed on stop of existing grass. It is an extremely easy way to fill in bare spots, thicken your turf, and even enhance your lawn’s color and health by introducing new varieties of grass. By introducing new varieties of grass into your lawn, your grass will become better equipped to handle stress, disease, and drought that may come its way.

Overseeding + Aeration

Overseeding is the perfect companion to your spring aeration. While aeration does allow water, air, and nutrients to accelerate your grass growth, it also provides a perfect seed-to-soil contact for overseeding. By introducing grass seed directly into the soil, seeds will grow more rapidly, efficiently, and will develop deeper roots. By utilizing both of these applications simultainiously, your lawn is sure to become luscious, beautiful, and healthy once again.
